HIS EXCELLENCY SENATOR (DR) ARTHUR IFEANYI OKOWA OFFERS 2000 DIGITAL ONLINE JOBS TO UNEMPLOYED DELTANS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AND ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION

In line with the SMART Agenda of His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State to provide jobs for the teeming unemployed and the sincere quest for prosperity for all Deltans, the Delta State Government in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and Rockefeller Foundation is offering 2000 online digital jobs to unemployed Deltans. To this end, a two day workshop is being organised for 2000 prospective unemployed youths of Delta State origin from Monday 1st to Tuesday 2nd February, 2016. 

The purpose of the workshop is to train participants on (MICROWORK) in order to access digital online jobs that would generate income of between $1000-$4000 dollars for them monthly.

Interested candidates who must be unemployed Deltans and computer literate, with a minimum of OND (Ordinary National Diploma) should apply online at the official website of the Ministry of Science and Technology – (www.most.dl.gov.ng) not later than Tuesday, 26th January, 2016.

OSITA CHIDOKA: A BEAUTIFUL POLITICAL BRIDE

Children’s immediate families will shape their personalities and determine as well as influence their lives’ trajectories as to career, marriage, and others. A child’s family has the greatest influence on him or her. My interaction with Osita Chidoka’s father informed as well as reinforced my belief that our families do shape our personalities and are linked to our achievements and failures in life.
 
We were in the expansive compound of Osita Chidoka when the news of Obinna Chidoka’s victory at the election tribunal filtered in. In response to that cheery and soul-lifting news, the throng of expectant party faithful, and friends and relatives of Osita Chidoka went into a frenzy of Jubilation. A soldier standing near me pulled out his rifle and fired into the sky. Then, staccato sound of gunshots rang out from different places in the expansive lush compound. And some ladies broke into a familiar song and gyrated beautifully and seductively to its rhythm.
 
Amidst this atmosphere of conviviality and jubilation, my wife and I were ushered into the living room of Osita Chidoka, the former minister of aviation. We sat across him, and there were other guests there, too. I had gone there to present my book to him. Then, an elderly man with very fair skin broke the silence that enveloped the room when he cleared his throat and called for prayer. The man, who is remarkably handsome, is the father of Osita Chidoka, the former aviation minister. His intellectual depth, philosophical bent of mind, and firm grasp of the bible, all these qualities of his greatly endeared him to me. He effortlessly quoted passages from the bible; and he knows some psalms in the bible by heart. Not only is he a man of great learning, but also he is forthright and honest. He advised us to desist from engaging in evil deeds.
 
My interaction with Chidoka’s father gave me a glimpse into the personality of Chief Osita Chidoka, Ike Obosi. Osita Chidoka’s strict family upbringing and the quality education he received are what prepared him for the leadership positions he held while in the bloom of his youth. His life is an exemplification of the Shakespearean truism that says this:  “Some are born great; some achieve greatness; and others have greatness thrust upon them.” Chidoka achieved greatness, however.
 
Osita Chidoka worked as a personal assistant for the minister of state in the Federal Ministry of works and housing and the minister of transport between 1997 and 2000. His grasp of the Nigerian politics, sociability, amiability, and humility are the factors that secured the jobs for him. While working for those politicians, he learned the nitty gritty of the Nigerian politics.
 
Not surprisingly, he got a well-deserved preferment in 2007 when he was entrusted with the leadership of FRSC. During his leadership of FRSC, he formulated and implemented pragmatic policies, which led to the reduction of the number of bus accidents on our roads. More so, he organised lectures on road safety measures for commercial bus drivers and motorcyclists. Those that flouted traffic laws and rules were always punished in accordance with the traffic laws. He enforced the wearing of helmets by motorcyclists plying our roads. And it’s he that digitalized the processes for the acquisition of driver’s licence in Nigeria. More so, he contributed towards the solving of Nigeria’s problem of youth unemployment by recruiting qualified university graduates into different cadres in the FRSC.
So not surprising, he was appointed Nigeria’s aviation minister in 2014. He set to work soon after he was made the minister of aviation. It is to his credit that touting activities were stamped out at our airports. CCTVs were installed at the nation’s airports, which improved their security situation. And he had formulated policies aimed at revamping and rejuvenating the much-troubled Nigerian aviation industry before the ruling party to which he belongs lost the last presidential election. A loyal and staunch member of the PDP, he campaigned passionately for the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Being a man with genteel refinement, he didn’t descend to the low-level of calling their political opponents unprintable and uncharitable names while on the husting.
 
Now, some politicians who used to be in the top hierarchy of PDP had defected to APC, the ruling political party owing to pecuniary factor and other selfish reasons. Unlike those politicians without guiding philosophies, principles, and political ideologies, he has not switched political party. Owing to his deep religious background, and positive morality-code, Chidoka is not easily swayed by monetary inducements. He is still a staunch member of PDP. More so, till now, his ever- rising political career is not sullied by accusations of financial misdemeanour. EFCC is neither hounding him nor is ICPC on his trail for any financial wrong-doing. That is a measure of his shining and exemplary morality-code and probity. The Obosi-born titled Chief, Chief Osita Chidoka, is an exemplar of political sagacity and island of integrity.
 
Now, since Uche Ekwunife who contested for the senatorial slot of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone on the platform of PDP exited PDP, there have been relentless and ceaseless strident calls for Osita Chidoka to be nominated as the PDP’s flag-bearer in the forth-coming Anambra Central Senatorial re-run election. Ekwunife defected to APC upon the Nullification of her election victory by the Appeal Court.
 
Alongside other topnotch politicians who belong to the  Anambra PDP, Osita Chidoka towers above them in terms of clout, cult following, leadership qualities, political sagacity,  and clean public records.
 
Were Nigeria a civilized and developed country, Chidoka and his ilk would be included in the government at the centre owing to their reservoir of knowledge, political wisdom, probity, patriotism, and leadership qualities, not minding the political parties to which they belong. That will be inclusive government at work.

Nigeria's Power Couple

Brigadier General Cecilia U. Akagu and Brigadier General Clifford B. Wanda are Nigeria’s first married army officers to attain the same rank of Brigadier General.
Brigadier General Akagu is from Ankpa in Kogi State while her husband is from Enugu Ngwo in Enugu State.

Brigadier General Wanda joined the Nigerian Army in the mid-1980s, and he attended Nigerian Military School, Zaria.

The fact that the couple have different last names is not unusual, as some military personnel keep their last names for administrative purposes, especially if they met on the job. The distinguished Nigerian army officers met when they were both commissioned officers and got married.
Whereas Brigadier General Akagu and Brigadier General Wanda are not the first commissioned officers to be married in the Nigerian Army, they hold the distinction of being the first to attain the rank of Brigadier General as a married couple.

ARE THESE PORTENTS OF APOCALYPTIC SITUATION? BY CHIEDU OKOYE

It was Hugo Grotius, a political scientist, who said this: “Governments come and go; but, a state remains forever.” But is this political axiom true in our today’s world? Not only do governments come and go; but also countries do break up into smaller nation – states. Some countries’ maps and boundaries have been re-drawn as some ethnic nations in those countries seceded from them.

World history is replete with stories about countries that disintegrated. USSR, a former super-power country, was composed of fifteen republics. But it disintegrated owing to the failure of its glasnost and perestroika system. Yugoslavia broke up into smaller countries; and Czechoslovakia dismembered, too. India and Pakistan used to be one country before now. In Africa, Somaliland emerged from Somali; and South Sudan broke away from Sudan. And Eritrea was formerly a part of Ethiopia. The number of countries that suffered dismemberment is many.

Till now, the wave of agitation for self-determination by ethnic nationalities is sweeping across the world. The Basque people in Spain are agitating for state-hood. Recently, the Scottish people conducted a referendum to determine their continued stay in Great Britain. Sadly, those agitating for the political emancipation of Scotland failed to achieve their goal.

The reasons behind the eruption of ethnic feelings and chauvinism in some countries which give rise to clamour for statehoods by ethnic nations are legion. A people in a heterogeneous country who are marginalized in their country’s scheme of things would battle to have a country of their own. Political domination of a minor ethnic group by bigger ones can lead to agitation for political sovereignty by the minor ethnic group. Ethnic hatred is the reason why nation-states in Africa descend into violent conflicts. Liberia, Sierra-Leone, Rwanda and others were ravaged by wars in the past. In Kenya, they are conscious of their ethnic origins; so, the kikuyu, Luo, and some other ethnic groups in Kenya do battle fiercely for the control of political power at the centre.

Back home, in Nigeria, since the inception of Nigeria, ethnic nationalities that make up the country have been making attempts to secede from Nigeria. During the colonial era, the Egbe Omo Oduduwa, a Yoruba Cultural Cum political group, declared their intention to leave the Nigeria union. The Hausa-Fulani people, who lay claim to being the sole and eternal custodian of political power in Nigeria, stated unequivocally in their nine point programme that they would like to secede from Nigeria. Isaac Adaka Boro, the Ijaw nationlist, declared the Niger-delta republic, which was short-lived.

The clamour by the diverse ethnic groups in Nigeria to leave the Nigerian federation has not died down even with the dawn of civilian administration in the country. Now, some terrorist groups with divisive ideologies have sprung in Nigeria. The Oodua group is to the south-west what MEND is to the Niger-delta people. In the past, The MEND group employed violent methods to express their displeasure with the Nigerian government. The Niger-delta militants would kidnap expatriate oil workers to express their grouse about the despoliation and degradation of their waters, eco-system, and soil through oil exploration by foreign oil companies. However, the militants were granted amnesty and rehabilitated by President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, which stemmed the tide of violence in the oil delta region.

But, now in Nigeria, it is the Boko Haram insurgency in the north that is threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria as one country. The number of victims of Boko  Haram insurgency is mounting daily. Those displaced by the insurgency have sought refuge in neigbouring countries. The urgent and speedy containment of the murderous group has become a desideratum since the activities of the group have the capacity of plunging Nigeria into a civil war.

While the north is on the boil, and has been turned to a sea of blood, the Indigenous People Of Biafra , a separatist group, has been staging peaceful protests in the south-east for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The clamour for the independence of the Biafran state has gained momentum and currency with the speeches read on Radio Biafra by Nnamdi Kanu. The Pro-Biafra agitator was arrested upon his return to Nigeria. His arrest and detention triggered the protests, which paralyzed economic activities in the south-east for some days.

But have we forgotten that the folk-hero with winsome smile, Colonel Emeka Ojukwu , declared the independence of the  state of Biafra in the 1960s when the Igbos living in the north suffered genocidal decimation? The federal government fought the secessionists for thirty months. The lives and properties destroyed in the gratuitous civil war cannot be quantified. Our country hasn’t recovered from the effects of the ravages of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war.

Sadly, the desire for the creation of the Biafra state has resurfaced and resurged. In response to the agitation for the creation of the Biafra state, the Nigerian army is engaging in unnecessary sabre-rattling as though the indivisibility of Nigeria was sacrosanct and inviolable. History has shown that a people who are alienated and marginalized have right to strive for the attainment of self-determination. The subtle threat by the government to use military might to subdue the Biafra agitators is provocative and insensitive.

The question that should agitate the minds of every patriotic Nigerian is this: what is behind the Igbo youths’ romance with the idea of the independent state of Biafra? The intractable Boko Haram insurgency and the Pro-Biafra protests are traceable to many factors, chief among them is the structural imbalances existing in Nigeria. Inequity and lack of egalitarianism in a country predispose it to suffering violent convulsions. Kids of Igbo origin seeking admission into unity schools are required to score high grades in the entrance examinations. But their compatriots and colleagues from the north who have low grades are being admitted into unity schools. These differential treatments that are meted out to Nigerians cause indignation, anger and discontentment to well up in our hearts.

And past and current civilian administrations in the country have treated Nigerians with utter contempt. Our leaders have failed to address the issues that bedeviled our country. Millions of university graduates are without jobs. Those unemployed people are with the feelings of disillusionment. A person with revolutionary ideas can mobilize those disgruntled youths and instigate them to embark on secessionist move.

To some people, the Biafran idea is not about carving out a geographical space for Biafra. It has got to do with redressing the ills that  have afflicted our country and giving restitution to victims of Nigeria’s past egregious and inhumane political leaderships. The proposed Biafran State is with geographical indeterminacy, however.

PASSION: MEET BASHIR THE LITERATE WHEELBARROW PUSHER

It is not every day that we get to meet young and talented people whose ordinary exploit and talent is distinguishing them from their peers.

Today, we bring you the story of Bashir who lost his father about twenty years ago but managed to finish secondary school despite the insurmountable challenges he faced.
Bashir later gained admission into a tertiary institution in Kano but has no money to pay for the tuition. To make ends meet, he came to Abuja and began a wheelbarrow pushing business, helping shoppers navigate the market while shopping while helping them to carry the things they buy.

He, however, is different from other ‘mai barrow’ as they are called. He dresses uniquely, like someone attending a social function or going to the office. He has a well-worn cap on his head, neat clothes, a pair of sandals worn over stockings, and a wrist watch.

He was discovered by a client, Chiemezie Claire Asunugwo-Anyanwu who was awed by his mannerism, dress sense and the likes.

SHUN EVIL VICES: WHY WE BECAME MEMBERS OF OCCULT GROUP

Four notorious cultists terrorizing Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Delta State University Abraka and its environs have been arrested by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The cultists, whose names were given as Enahoro Benedict Lucky, 21; a.k.a Freshboy, Ekinedo Odion, 29, aka overdose, Emmanuel Iluore, 24; aka Gayo, 24; and Dennis Isehomen, 28, were arrested following cultism related activities which led to the murder of two students in September, 2015.

In an interview with Vanguard, the suspects revealed what caused them to join a cult and the activities their cult has been involved in.

Enahoro Benedict Lucky: " I am from Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State. I am a 400 level electrical/electronic engineering student of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma. I was actually forced to join a secret cult named Vikings, a.k.a Arobarja, when I was in 200 level. I was initiated by a friend, Sammy Salami near Faith Baptist Church, Uleme. Last year, a member of our cult group called Brutus was killed by Aiye confraternity at Ukpenu, later our group retaliated by killing a member of Aiye. I was with two of my friends when I was arrested at Lovereal Gardens in Ekpoma. I was arrested, while others escaped ."

Ekinedo Odion : " I am from Uromi in Esan North-East Local Government Area in Edo State. I was arrested in Good Shepherd Hotel, Ekpoma. I became a member of Jures cult while I was in Rivers state. Later, I was initiated into Black Axe in 2013 after I gained admission into Ambrose Alli University in 2013. Members of my cult group have killed several persons from a rival cult gang; they killed three Aiye cult members within Ekpoma and its environs."

Emmanuel Iluore : " I am a final year student of Ambrose Alli University, AAU. I was initiated into Vikings cult group in 2006 by a friend called Endurance, a.k.a Wizard. In 2013, the former leader of the gang, named Bobo, handed over the leadership of the cult to me after I paid N35, 000 to him. In November 2014, I became the gang’s number one man; I led the gang for about a year before I handed the mantle of leadership to one Kalif. The cut-to-size single barrel gun belonging to the cult used for operations was recovered by the police in Ben’s house in June 2015. It was Wisdom, the number one man of Black axe that killed Brutus sometime in 2014 .”

Denis Iseghohimen : " I attended Ambrose Alli Primary School. I was arrested at Rainbow Hotel at Ileh, along Idialu Bennington. I was initiated on September 26, 2013 in Delta State University Abraka. Vincent is our gang number and he is in possession of our operational weapon which includes a locally made gun and battle axe and regalia. I was among the people who killed a member of Aiye confraternity cult called Tilo, while Manfight killed Idohu in retaliation."

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the gang’s armourer, Sammy Salami, who is currently at large.

TAKE US TO THE VERY BEGINNING

Hmmm. As the popular saying goes ‘’A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step’’ so I will say, I took a step at a time, and the turning point for me was when I noticed my insatiable love for shoes. As a child I did a lot of creative things, like building cages for my pets ,fixing electrical problems in the house etc. This gave my parents the idea of the kind of school I should attend, since I was really not paying so much attention to the conventional schooling environment of my age group. In 1998, I left Army Day Secondary School in Senior Secondary 1, for Sapele Technical College, Sapele Delta state, where I studied Electrical Installation from 1998 to 2001 and was certified with NTC/NBC NATIONAL TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE. That same year, I gained admission into the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity Trade Test of Nigeria, where I obtained the certificate of competence in Electrical Installation Works (D&I) grade I, II & III.
After my graduation from college, I travelled to Lagos to spend the holiday with my mother, by this time, I had two and half months left from the long holiday. I waited for the entrance examination result that will enable me study Electrical Electronics Engineering in Petroleum Training Institute(P.T.I), Delta State Effurun. While spending this quality time with my mom, she told me stories about my childhood, she emphasised on how she bought Christmas shoes every year and how I refused to wear them, but would rather clean and polish them, before taking them to bed and she always asked if I did not find my act a bit strange. I did not have a direct response to her question. However, she concluded that shoes were my calling. She even chipped in that, she sees and admire this set of footwear a young man close to her shop makes, and she wanted me to learn from him.
Wow! What? Me! Shoe maker? God forbid! I flared up lol. No way, I cried out loud that I am an Engineer. She calmed me down and said that, it would not stop me from continuing my education, but she feels that it could make a good hobby, if I could take her advice. I did not agree with her immediately, but from that minute I could not just stop thinking about the idea. I imagined what the process and possibilities of making a footwear will be, I slept and woke up with the thoughts, until the morning I went to her out of curiosity, and asked her when I would be meeting the young shoe maker, and that my friend, was how it all started.

WHAT IS YOUR TARGET MARKET?

We target the working class even though our products appeal to almost everyone, and as such we supply shops in the malls who retail our brand, so that our target market has easier access. Some of the shops we do business with includes, Daviva and O’Eclat by Gbemmy Johnson. Furthermore, companies like Lydia heart Innitiative, Macforte and RUN FOR A CURE AFRICA have given us the platform to showcase our work to foreigners and tourists, people from all over the world place orders via our website, phonecalls, email, and our various social media platform.

IMPRESSIVE! SO IF YOU WERE NOT DOING THIS, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE DONE?

Well, it hurts me to see how we (Nigerians) buy the most expensive phones, laptops and other electronic gadgets, with zero interest in how they are being manufactured. So if I was not doing this, I would have been a manufacturer of these electronic gadgets.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF BEING THE BOSS OF REVERSE?

The hardest part of my job is ensuring that the minutest detail of every piece of work we do is well taken care of. Daunting but satisfying.

NICEST THING DONE BY A CLIENT 

A client gave me a work space for two years in exchange of 40 pieces of handbags, a kind of batter agreement.

WORST THING DONE BY A CLIENT

When a client poached some of my workers thinking they could do it all and after a while they could not keep up.
Call it karma!

PAST PROJECTS 

We have been involved with several empowerment projects that help youths who are interested in the art of being creative in the past.
We have also been one of the major bag producers for Daviva fashion for the past three years, and as such, we are one of the highest Ankara bag producers in the country, since Daviva has at least one shop in all the major shopping malls   in Nigeria.
We have partnered with designers such as O’Eclat, Ankara Freak, Jete Accessories, Muma & Ices, Ehiz-Mode, Beauty Johnson Emporium, Bata Esho, Riyaz Fashion, 5 Fingers, Alifa Concept, Rouge Valleri, ROOSE, Oge by Dara and many more in executing fashion projects.
We do yearly projects with companies like Nigerian Textiles, Lydia Heart Initiative, RUN FOR A CURE AFRICA and Macforte
We have been involved with Runwayfadan2015 and West African Fashion Awards, to mention but a few.

FUTURE

REVERSE would launch its Clothing Line of cutting edge fashion  that embodies our passion for people, art and fashion next year.


WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

Only time would tell, but by the grace of God we would be at the top of the fashion industry across the globe.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

The word of God. Especially Job 8:7 that says 'knowing so well that my latter end shall increase greatly than my beginning'. It just keeps me going and I do not worry about anything. But I always aspire to be better.

YOUR HIGHEST POINT SO FAR

I would say, this point at which I am standing. Because I am currently running a company with eight loyal and permanent staff, three contract staff, and five apprentice. Moreover, it is not just about how much Naira or Dollars I make or have made, but rather, the number of people I influence or reach out to through my work is what counts. Someone once told me that 'Any fool can make money', and I agree with him. So bearing this in mind, I feel honoured to be an employer of labour. Secondly,  we produce at least 100 hand bags and 100 footwears every week and this has been going on for three good years, to cap it all, I am glad that we meet the demands of 100 people weekly. We have come a long way, and we have a longer way to go.

YOUR LOWEST POINT SO FAR

Lowest point was that point at which I had to batter with my personal belongings, I offered my phones and jewelries in exchange for raw Materials, in order to keep my dream alive.

HOW DO YOU RELAX?

By swimming and going to the movies.

ANY ADVISE FOR YOUNGER ONES INTERESTED IN YOUR LINE OF BUSINESS?

My advice is that you must be passionate about it, if not don’t bother yourself.

RebirthRAIN, Kindly introduce yourself

Stephanie, My name is Etiaka Awunlika Stephanie, I am 21 years old from Aniocha south local government area of Delta state, the last of 5 children, a Christian and student of the department of Business Administration, University of Lagos.

What does education mean to you

Education to me is a means of opening your mind to the world. It is not an end in itself but it is a means of achieving an ultimate end, which is the enlightenment of the human mind to the countless opportunities available to it.

What do you do

Basically, am a student, an entrepreneur, a sports administrator and a social participant.
I am currently the Sports Secretary of the University of Lagos Students' Union.

Why sport

My devotion to this unpopular path to women actually stems from the passion I have for Sports, and as a manager I saw the lapses we had in the areas of Administration and structure in this particular sector, which informed my decision to contribute my own quota in terms of structure and a functional system in the University environment.

What is the hardest thing about your job

I would say the hardest thing about my job is the lack of a laid down structure in this particular sector of the University, that I happen to find myself in, and its the same situation in the country as a whole.

The most recent is The UNILAG SPORTS FESTIVAL, we also had KICK OFF BREAST CANCER amongst others.

What inspires you
I am inspired mostly by the mere thought that, I owe a responsibility to the upcoming generation to leave the world better than I met it. Thats the reason i always try to do my best at all times.

Future Projects
I would like to have a sports Administration and management workshop, that is aimed at building and equipping upcoming sports practitioners, with the required managerial and administrative skills to revamp the Sports sector in the country. Huge dream shey?

Where do you see yourself in the next five years

I see myself running a thriving business, happily in love! Being a better version of myself and most of all, adding value to the society.

You work really hard, how do you relax

Watching a football game, it works for me every time, I also relax by listening to music and attending comedy shows.

Highest moment

When I took my oath of office, my swearing in as Sports Secretary.

Lowest moment

When we were about to start The UNILAG SPORTS FESTIVAL in September and it seemed like it would fail, mehn! I was scared and distraught.

Happiest moment

Each time I get to put a smile on someone's face. Like when people call me and tell me 'Sports Sec' thank you for doing this and that.

Saddest moment

When I wrote my final paper and realised that my father was not there to see the woman his Jewel of inestimable value had become.

How would you describe Nigeria

Hmmnn Nigeria. I think we are a work in progress, we are like a canvas already imprinted with the sketches of a beautiful picture. The Artist (NIGERIANS) have to trace out and color the lines and shades to present that picture that we so desire to see.

ROSE OBI: THE NEW PRIDE OF ANAMBRA STATE BY CHIEDU OKOYE

Is Anambra State not the home state of achievers, who have made marks and achieved distinctions in their respective endeavours and careers at the global level? The new Anambra State, which is carved out of the old Anambra State in 1991, teems with academic high-fliers, literary stars, business moguls, sports icons, musical superstars, political sages, and venerable men of the cloth. I would like us to know that the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a freedom fighter, political titan, and Pan-Africanist, hailed from Anambra State. Power Mike, a former world wrestling champion; Mary Onyali – Omagbemi, the former African sprints queen of the tracks; Chief  Osita Osadebe, high-life music maestro; Chike Obi, a great  Mathematician;Chinua Achebe, the father of modern African  literature; Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former common-wealth secretary, and others hail from Anambra State.

Not surprisingly, Anambra State’s slogan as well as motto is the ‘light of the nation’. It is a fitting epithet that captures succinctly the state’s essence. Has the state not been living up to that appellation? Past successive civilian governments in the state had set enviable praxis in the areas of infrastructural development and judicious management of financial resources. When some other states in the federation are financially distressed, the Anambra state government is executing infrastructural projects and paying workers in the state’s employ as and when do.

More so, Governor Willie Obiano has consolidated and improved on the achievements recorded in the educational sector by the immediate past civilian administration. It was Mr. Peter Obi, the immediate former Government of Anambra State, who revamped schools in the state. He articulated and executed practical educational polices, which have been yielding positive results for the state. Anambra State has emerged as the best performing state in such examinations as S.S.C.E and NECO for three successive years. And Team Anambra won the inter Basic Debate competition, which other states in the Federation participated in. The laudable and spectacular feat achieved by Team Anambra happened soon after Rose Nkem Obi won the 2015 Maltina Teacher Of The Year Competition, which was organized by the Nigerian Breweries.

Rose Nkem Obi has come into national prominence by posting a stunning performance at the Maltina Teacher Of The Year Awards. By winning the maiden edition of that national teaching competition, she has entered the   Pantheon hall of Anambra State great achievers. A native of Agulu, Anambra State, the light-skinned lady with infectious effervescence and deep scholarly bent was born in 1978. A precocious and brilliant lass, she represented Anaocha L.G.A, which is in Anambra State , in a school competition held at Enugu while a pupil of  Practising School, Agulu, Anambra state. And, expectedly, she had a credit pass in the First School Leaving Certificate Examination in 1989. She outshone other pupils in that examination.

After completing her primary education at Practising School, Agulu, she proceeded to Loretto Special Science School, Agulu, for her post-primary education. While a student in the school, her personality was moulded by Mrs. Nwachukwu, her school principal; Mr. Chukwuezi, her mathematics teacher; and Mr. Nwajiobi, her Chemistry teacher. They imparted knowledge to her and inculcated the virtues of industry, punctuality, love of books, obedience, and humility into her. While her mathematics teacher would teach them some topics after school hours, her chemistry teacher simplified organic chemistry for them with his effective and unique methodology of teaching.

She attended Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and earned a degree in Pure and Industrial Chemistry in 2000. During her mandatory NYSC programme, she worked as a graduate assistant to Professor P.A.C Okoye. Mrs. Rose Nkem Obi, the erudite chemistry teacher at Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha, possesses post-graduate certificate in education and an M.S.C in chemistry. It was in 2013 that she was fully absorbed as a senior education officer by the Federal Ministry of Education after her ten-year stint at Federal Government Girls’ College as a P.T.A teacher.

Her teaching job at FGGC Onitsha and the tutelage she received at home and schools prepared her adequately for the competition and are the factors behind her emergence as the Maltina teacher of the year. At Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha, teachers are monitored and assessed periodically. And when the quality of a teacher’s teaching starts to dip, the teacher will undergo tutelage. More so, being the daughter of a secondary school mathematics teacher, Mrs. Akpulu, she developed a great liking for Mathematics and the sciences. Mrs. Rose Nkem Obi, who has a good grasp of chemistry, does her teaching job painstakingly and conscientiously. No wonder, her students do mill around her in the same way as bees are attracted to honey.

She has been reaping rewards for her diligence, industry, love of books, scholarly nature, humility, and positive out-look on life. She entered the Maltina Teacher Of The Year Competition in the hope of putting up a good performance at the competition, not being unaware that other contestants are brilliant people, who prepared adequately for that competition. But to her surprise, she emerged the winner of that competition. She attributed her victory to God, who gave her wisdom, grace, and immense mental abilities.

Before emerging the overall winner, she scaled the hurdle placed before her. She wrote a 150 – word-essay on her teaching philosophy; and a 750 – word case study of her teaching strategy, practicality of the strategy and challenges. And not only was she assessed while teaching her students in a classroom by a panel set up by Nigerian Breweries Ltd, the Panel of Judges each interviewed her in Lagos.

The ebullient Rose Nkem Obi, who exudes magnetic warmth and has a comely face that is always wreathed in smiles, is married to a Lawyer. And they have a seven-year-old daughter. Her husband is her boon companion, and she accompanies him to National Bar Meeting, yearly.

Outside academic activities, Rose Nkem Obi is a keen fan of athletics and athletes. She was the games prefect in her school in 1995. Then, she was a sprinter, who participated in 100m, 200m, and 4x100m races. However, her mother discouraged her from seeking a career in athletics, especially sprint races. Her favourite sprinter is Usain Bolt. And she used to be a great fan of Mary Onyali- Omagbemi and Chioma Ajunwa during their sporting hey-day.

Rose Nkem Obi received N500,000 and N1,000,000  respectively for being both state and national champions. And for five years, she will receive one million naira each year on world teachers’ day, which takes place on every October 5. More so, for being the national champion, she will undergo further professional training outside Nigeria. And the Nigerian Breweries Plc, which is the sponsor of the competition, will execute infrastructural project in her school that is worth 25 million naira as she is the Maltina Teacher  Of The Year.

It is an indisputable fact that the lissome lady, who looks much younger than her 37 years on earth, has entered the revered Nigeria’s hall of fame. A likable and overly ambitious lady, Rose Nkem Obi aspires to become an authority on the best teaching strategies for teaching sciences in secondary schools. Regarding her journey to resounding success, the sky is the starting place for this chemistry teacher at Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha.
